EFAS Travelling Fellowship Report 2013

Report by 2013 EFAS Fellows; Natalia Gutteck and Shafic Al-Nammari

At first, we would like to thank EFAS for the exquisite educational program and the great opportunity to visit different foot and ankle centres in Europe and to Integra for the financial support offered to make this fellowship possible.

Our fellowship started at the Foot and Ankle Institute in Brussels.

After being introduced to the members of the institute Dr. Gombault, Dr. Leemrijse, Dr. Devos Bevernage and Mr. Deleu, Pod., we spent some remarkable days attending the theatres. We were able to see a wide spectrum of hindfoot and forefoot surgery with the screwless Scarf osteotomy and the arthroscopy of the subtalar joint being the highlights.

We enjoyed the dinner together and learned that the Belgians have as many beer brands as inhabitants. Thus, it will take a longer stay to learn more about that.

Our next stop was the HAGA Ziekenhuis in Den Haag.

Dr Faber received us cordially. It was a great pleasure to attend him in the theatre. We were able to see different ankle procedures like arthroplasty, supramelleolar osteotomy and ankle arthroscopy.

After the exciting day at the theatre we enjoyed a sight-seeing tour learning the "Miami Beach" of Den Haag. Perhaps not with the same skyline but definitely better frittes. Finally we had a nice dinner together enjoying the great atmosphere in the artist's quarter of the city.

Finally, we attended the 4th EFAS Advanced symposium in Edinburgh.

There, the challenging topic „difficult scenarios“ was excellent treated by the first class faculty. During the lively discussions one had the outstanding possibility to widen our horizon and share the experience of other foot surgeons.

We appreciate very much the help of all the administrative team of the EFAS, especially Jane Governey!

Thank you very much,

Dr. Natalia Gutteck
